RE: The tariff classification of Calbiochem® Apolipoprotein A-I Human Plasma, High-Density Lipoprotein from the United States

In your letter dated December 18, 2012, you requested a tariff classification ruling. We apologize for the delay as the information was submitted to our laboratory for analysis.
The subject product, Calbiochem® Apolipoprotein A-I Human Plasma, High-Density Lipoprotein, functions as a cofactor of lecithin cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT). According to your letter, Apolipoprotein A-I is prepared from human plasma and plays an important role in high density lipoprotein metabolism.
The applicable subheading for the Calbiochem® Apolipoprotein A-I Human Plasma, High-Density Lipoprotein will be 3002.10.0290, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTSUS), which provides for “Human blood; animal blood prepared for therapeutic, prophylactic or diagnostic uses; antisera, other blood fractions and immunological products, whether or not modified or obtained by means of biotechnological processes; vaccines, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms (excluding yeasts) and similar products: Antisera, other blood fractions and immunological products, whether or not obtained by means of biotechnological processes: Other.” The rate of duty will be free.
