RE: The tariff classification of a glass cartridge fuse from Japan.
Dear Mr. Bennett:
In your letter dated April 5, 2012, you requested a tariff classification ruling on behalf of your client Aisin Holdings of America, Inc.
The item under consideration is a Glass Fuse, Part Number ST6-20A. From the information that you have provided, Part Number ST6-20A is a glass cartridge fuse. It is cylindrical in shape consisting of a fuse element encased in a sealed glass tube and attached to metal end caps. The glass cartridge fuse is used to restrict the amount of current flowing through a conductor. This one-time use fuse is designed to disintegrate and open an electrical circuit when the current exceeds the rated value of the fuse. It is stated that this fuse is manufactured for the automotive industry with a voltage (V) rating of less than 1000 V.
The applicable subheading for the Glass Fuse, Part Number ST6-20A, will be 8536.10.0020, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTSUS), which provides for “Electrical apparatus for switching or protecting electrical circuits, or for making connections to or in electrical circuits…for a voltage not exceeding 1,000 V…: Fuses: Glass cartridge.” The general rate of duty will be 2.7 percent ad valorem.
Duty rates are provided for your convenience and are subject to change. The text of the most recent HTSUS and the accompanying duty rates are provided on World Wide Web at http://www.usitc.gov/tata/hts/.
This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Part 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177).
