RE: The tariff classification of a rod end washer from the United States.

Dear Ms. Morrow:

In your letter dated May 14, 2010, you requested a tariff classification ruling.

You refer to part number 6781025 as a steel rod end washer. You state that the beveled shaped rod end washer is designed to be used with a rod end or spherical bearing when the bearing is not positively retained by a surrounding structure of a gas turbine aircraft engine. It is designed to hold the ball or race in place. A bolt is inserted through the small hole in the washer and through the bearing or rod end. The components are then secured in place with a nut.  You have stated that although the beveled shape allows freedom of movement for the rod end and spherical bearing, the rod end washer is not designed to function as a spacer or moving part.

The applicable subheading for the rod end washer, part number 6781025, will be 7318.22.0000, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTSUS), which provides for screws, bolts, nuts, coach screws, screw hooks, rivets, cotters, cotter pins, washers (including spring washers) and similar articles, of iron or steel: non-threaded articles: other washers.

This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Part 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177).

A copy of the ruling or the control number indicated above should be provided with the entry documents filed at the time this merchandise is imported. If you have any questions regarding the ruling, contact National Import Specialist Kathy Campanelli at (646) 733-3021.
